John Birmingham Cup for Songwriting
The legacy of John Birmingham, a much loved regular at The Cumberland Arms in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne was to establish the John Birmingham Cup, a competition for songwriters of unaccompanied song in the folk tradition.
Entry to the competition is through one of a number of heats held around the country and Upton Folk Festival is proud, again, to host the heat for the South West on Sunday, 1st May.
To enter please complete the entry form (link below) and email it to Chairman@UptonFolk.Org or bring it with you to the festival office on the day of the heat – pre-registration is recommended as the competition is very popular and time is limited for the heat. Payment of the entry fee of £5 must be made at the Festival Office prior to the heat. Please be at the Memorial Hall by 5 pm for administration.
The JB Cup is not about the best singers it’s about the best songs that will get the whole room going, whether that be in tears or in rousing chorus
Winner of the John Birmingham Cup (Upton Heat):
Gilly Kemp (centre) with judges Sue Harris and Damien Barber
